2024 Spring Awakenings
A social and cultural argument written before its time, Spring Awakening: A Children’s Tragedy is a sharp indictment of a repressive society that keeps its children in ignorance about puberty, sex, and sexuality. The plot follows three young people in a provincial German village in the 1890s: Wendla Bergmann, a young woman curious about where babies come from and why; Melchior Gabor, a rebellious intellectual with abundant knowledge but little emotional maturity; and Moritz Stiefel, a struggling student anxious to understand his developing body as he searches for success in school. As these three young people seek awareness, their worlds crumble around them through repression by the adults in their lives. A tragedy of rape, abuse, and suicide, Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening: A Children’s Tragedy continues to amaze and impact audiences over a century after its first performance.
2023 Henry Lumper
The author creates an epic drama which captures the sense and shape of life in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from the 1950s to the present day. Prince Hal, Hotspur, Falstaff and many others are on hand in the guise of Hal Boley and Harry Percy (sons of two rival union leaders) and Jack Silva (Hal’s drinking companion) and, as in Shakespeare’s play, they are inexorably drawn into scandal and dispute. In the present play the action focuses on “Glossop’s” waterfront which, as the traditional fishing industry declines, finds itself the center of illicit drug trafficking, venal real estate speculation and union corruption—all of which add to the woes of a local citizenry already beset by economic and social problems not of its own making. Inevitably the growing tensions build to a climax which is both theatrically explosive and tragic—but which also offers the hope that the bitter lessons learned might lead on to positive change once the overheated emotions of the moment have cooled.
2022 Leading Ladies
Set in the 1950s, Leading Ladies focuses on two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, who find their careers in a rut. They are currently performing "Scenes from Shakespeare" on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, however the actors resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. Hilarity ensues when it turns out the relatives are actually nieces and not nephews. Things get even more complicated when Leo falls madly in love with the old lady's vivacious niece, Meg, who's engaged to the local minister.
